Religious Formation Ministry
Preschool to Junior High School
Classes - Sacred
Heart parish offers religious formation classes for ages three-through
junior high school. There are two options:
Sunday mornings: 9:00 - 9:55 AM up to 6th
grade or Wednesday
evenings: 7 -
8 PM up through junior high school. (See Youth Ministry for High School)
Curriculum: Preschool:
The three and four year olds use Resources for Christian Living's
newest program called, "Stories of God's
Love". These are Bible stories and
activities suited for their level with parent sheets with each lesson to
take home. Children are taught reverence for the Bible and traditions of
the Church as well as basic prayers.
Elementary:
Kindergarten-6th Grade students use Faith First program from Resources
for Christian Living. Using the spiral system each student, using the
four pillars of Catechism, will learn about the Creed, Liturgy and
Sacraments, Christian Morality, and Christian Prayer, throughout the
year on their level of understanding. Learning how to apply this
information is vital to building strong Catholic children. Parent sheets
will be sent home each week to inform them on what the children have
been presented in hopes that the family will further encourage this way
of life.
Junior High:
7th and 8th grade students will be using one of five texts offered for
the year for twelve weeks and then a second book for the remaining weeks
of the school year. The choices are: Mystery of God, Morality: Life in
Christ, Church and Sacraments, Jesus in the New Testament, and Church
History. All these texts conform to the Catechism of the Catholic
Church. Application and connecting with the teens life day to day living
is important to paving the way to an adult understanding of the Church.
RCL Curriculum Family Website:
www.FaithFirst.com This is a great website with
chapter reviews, family activities, games, stories, saints and more.
Sacramental Preparation:
All children who are
baptized and are at least 7 years old are eligible to prepare for
Reconciliation (Confession) in the Fall and Eucharist ( Holy Communion)
in the Spring. We use the curriculum from Loyola Press called
"God's Gift". Parents and children meet for six weeks each session and
learn together on Sunday afternoons. Children must also be
attending Religious Formation classes at their parish or Notre Dame.
Parents must be registered with Sacred Heart. First Communion is usually
during one Mass in April or May.
Educational and Spiritual Material
Assistance: The director of religious
formation is available for assistance in lending books, videos and tapes
to those interested in increasing their faith and building their
relationship with Jesus.
Summer Family Week:
In June for five nights the parish opens up their
doors to all families for dinner, prayer and fun activities for all
ages. The themes change each year and the adult programs also change to
facilitate the needs of a growing parish.
Family Gatherings:
Several times a year the Religious Formation
classes open up for students and their families. We will have a special
program with prayer, crafts, and Scripture readings based on a
liturgical theme or Catholic teaching. It is a special time for all
families to relax , have a donut or juice and learn with their children.
They will be at 9AM or 7PM, Sunday or Wednesday.
